Southern cross of honor, 1895 ca.

Cross-shaped medal, ca. 1895, presented by the Daughters of the Confederacy "to the U.C.V." (i.e., the United Confederate Veterans), and awarded to William Lewis Beasley of Company C, 4th Virginia Cavalry. On the verso of the medal are engraved the name of the manufacturer, Charles W. Crankshaw, Atlanta, Ga., and the legend, "Southern Cross of Honor - Deo vindice, 1861-1865."

The Southern Cross of Honor award, which later became the Cross of Military Service, originated on Oct. 13, 1862 as an act of the Confederate Congress to recognize the courage and good conduct of officers, non-commissioned officers and privates of the Confederate army.
